Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball head coach Dan McHale “will not be retained,” it was announced by Athletics Director Stephen Lochmueller on Monday.

“After reviewing our men’s basketball program, I determined a change in leadership is needed at this time,” Lochmueller said. “We want to thank Dan McHale for his service to Eastern Kentucky University, our community and the men’s basketball program. We wish Dan, Jackie and their family all the best in the future.”

According to a statement from the program, a national search for McHale’s replacement will begin immediately. In the meantime, Assistant Coach Reece Gaines will serve as acting head coach.

McHale was introduced as the Colonel’s 20th head coach in April 2015. He recently completed his third season. During that time, the Colonels compiled a 38-55 overall record and a 16-34 mark against conference teams. EKU did not qualify for the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament in any of those three seasons
