Kentucky’s Alex Poythress had a game high 21 points and 13 rebounds, as the 5th ranked Wildcats rebounded from last week’s loss at UCLA, to defeat Eastern Kentucky 88-67. JaVontae Hawkins was EKU’s high point man with 19 points but the big story came from behind the arc.
Eastern Kentucky entered as one of the nation’s best three point shooting teams, but against the Cats, the Colonels could only hit 5 of 19 three-point attempts. That’s just 27.8 per cent.
EKu kept the game close, at one point trailing by just eight with around seven minutes to go. However, Kentucky was too big and too tough, finishing the game on a 17-4 run, and out rebounding Eastern by twice as much, 50-25.
Jamal Murray added 16 for Big Blue, one of five in double figures, while Tyler Ulis added nine points and eight assists.
Jarelle Reischel had 12 points for EKU. The Colonels fall to 7-3 and next play at Marshall on Saturday, while Kentucky improves to 8-1 and next hosts Arizona State also on Saturday.
