Whitmore is a chestnut gelding by Pleasantly Perfect, out of the Scat Daddy mare Melody’s Spirit, foaled on Jan. 23, 2013 in Kentucky. Whitmore is named after Wilbur Whitmore, a high school football teammate of trainer Ron Moquett. Whitmore broke his maiden first time out on Nov. 6, 2015 at Churchill Downs at 15-1 odds.

Whitmore is owned by Harry T. Rosenblum, Robert V. LaPenta and Southern Springs Stables, trained by Ron Moquett and ridden by Victor Espinoza. Moquett studied at the University of Arkansas and admits to cutting class to go to the races at Oaklawn. He trained stakes winner Gentlemen’s Bet, who ran third in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Espinoza is a three-time Breeders’ Cup winner, three-time Kentucky Derby winner, and guided 2014 Kentucky Derby winner and Horse of the Year California Chrome to a victory in the $10 million Dubai World Cup.
