DERBY 144 | Local Trainers Looking For A Derby Weekend Win

04/25/2018 01:50 PM

Louisville-native and trainer Brad Cox has two fillies in contention for the Kentucky Oaks. Monomy Girl, who will be ridden by Florent Geroux and Sassy Sienna, jockeyed by Gary Stevens. He has never had a Kentucky Oaks win, but said it would be big for him as he has visited the track as long as he can remember.

Same goes for fellow trainer Dale Romans. Romans said he grew up in the barn. He’s the all-time winningest trainer at Churchill Downs, but a Derby and Oaks win have eluded him all this time. He has several chances at Derby 144. He has two Oaks horses: Classy Act, and Coach Rocks, who is partially owned by former UofL Head Coach Rick Pitino and will be rode by Luis Saez.

In the Run For The Roses, Romans has Promises Fufilled who will have Corey Lanerie atop him, and Free Drop Billy- with Robby Albarado riding.

Also of note on Wednesday, Bill Mott-trained Hofburg had his first go on the muddy Churchill Downs turf. He will be ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr.
