Coaching carousel could have impact on Kentucky teams

Cal started the dominoes falling… not coach Cal. Not this time. The University of California that is. After hiring away Tennessee’s head coach, Cuonzo Martin, last week it started that latest edition of the coaching carousel. Tennessee announced today that they have hired Southern Mississippi head Coach Donnie Tyndall.
Tyndall you may remember made a name for himself at Morehead State by knocking off Louisville in the opening round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Tyndall spring boarded that success into the head job at Southern Miss. In his two years at USM, his record speaks for itself. 56-17 and two straight trips to the NIT. Not too shabby for a team that had been to only two post season tournaments in the last 12 years prior.
With the hiring of Tyndall, there is now a vacancy that must be filled at Southern Miss. Preliminary reports of possible candidates include not one but two names with prominent local ties. The first is current UK assistant Kenny Payne. Payne is lauded as one of the premiere recruiters in the country. With Payne, it’s not a matter of if but when. He was a finalist for the Mississippi State job in 2012. Payne is also a native of Mississippi.
The second name that appears on that list is current EKU head man Jeff Neubauer. Neubauer has a proven success record as a head coach. Completing his ninth season in Richmond, Neubauer’s record is 167-122. Neubauer has been to two straight post season tournaments and has put together two straight 20-plus win seasons.
Other names that are being tossed around include: Wichita State assistant coach Greg Heiar, Louisiana Lafayette head coach Bob Marlin and former Mississippi State head coach Rick Stansbury.
