Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich has transformed the Cardinal program over the last fifteen years and he sat down with cn|2 Sports to discuss some of the challenges and success during his tenure. In the interview, Jurich explained the difficulty that came with trying to transition from Hall of Fame basketball coach Denny Crum and rebuilding the football program that was in shambles under Ron Cooper.
In the five-part interview, Jurich explained his decision to stand behind basketball coach Rick Pitino, who he says was unsure about coming to Louisville because of his loyalty to the University of Kentucky program, during the Karen Sypher trial. It was a move that was based in loyalty, which Jurich says is the trademark of his leadership at UofL.
On the football side of things, Jurich outlined the recruitment of current head coach Charlie Strong, who arrived two years ago from the University of Florida, and explained the plan for keeping him at UofL for the long term. Jurich also said that his biggest regret in his fifteen years at UofL is putting Steve Kragthorpe in a difficult position by forcing him to retain some of Bobby Petrino’s assistants. Since firing Kragthorpe, Jurich says the two friends have not spoken.
