On Wednesday, Churchill Downs Racetrack broke ground on Derby City Gaming, a $60 million, state-of-the-art historical racing facility.
It is the first of its kind in the state and will house 600 historical racing machines, a simulcast wagering area and player’s club reward center. Officials say the goal of the new facility is to strengthen horse racing in Kentucky and grow its customer base.
The 85,000 square foot facility will be located on Poplar Level Road, Churchill Downs’ former Trackside location. Derby City Gaming is expected to open in fall 2018.
Churchill Downs Racetrack president Kevin Flanery discussed the significance Derby City Gaming is hoped to have on horse racing in Kentucky.
Dale Romans, the all-time leading trainer at Churchill Downs, was also present for the ceremonious groundbreaking, and discussed the evolution of Churchill Downs since he first entered the industry.
