Bru's Views: Geno Auriemma is wrong, men's basketball is just fine

U-Conn women’s coach Geno Auriemma made quite an impression when he recently commented on the state of the men’s game…saying things like….
The men’s game is a joke…..College basketball is so far behind the times it’s unbelievable…and other major sports have taken steps to help people be better on the offensive end of the floor.
Geno Auriemma is right up there with former Tennessee Coach Pat Summitt as the greatest Women’s Basketball Coaches of all time. But that doesn’t mean he just gets a pass. Auriemma is flat out wrong. Men’s college basketball is not a joke…it’s a gem. Did you see the ratings for the Kentucky-Notre Dame game? It set new cable TV records. Does that sound like a sport that is behind the times?
You talk about fixing the offensive side of the game as if that’s the magic elixir. A 94-91 game can be thrilling but so can a 55-52 contest as well. The difference is one of those games has defense to go along with offense. More is not necessarily better. A 1-0 shutout in baseball can be edge of your seat excitement while a 10-9 game can be fun, but then it’s almost waiting for the team with the last at-bat. Some of the drama is missing.
Coach…what you should also do is take a hard look at your own sport. The Lady Huskies are too dominant. This year the 36-1 Huskies are heavy favorites to win their 3rd straight title, 5th in 7 years and 10th since 1995. That’s good for UConn but not for the ladies game. Maybe that’s why the stands for NCAA Women’s Tournamant games are half filled or less.
The only change I’d like to see in men’s basketball is with the shot clock.I would sync it up with the NBA. Either everyone has a 24 second clock, or everyone has a 35 second clock. Other than that, why try and fix what is not broken. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
