Former University of Louisville basketball player Chris Jones allegedly threatened to “smack” a female student with whom he was having a relationship prior to being kicked off the team.
According to a University of Louisville police report, a female student who was in “an intimate off and on relationship” with Jones for the past year filed a report on Tuesday, February 17, after she received a text message from the former player stating he would “smack the (redacted) out of” her.
The woman told police she had gone to Jones’ apartment the night before but left around 3 a.m. the next morning after “messing up” his room. The report says Jones then responded with his alleged text message at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
The woman, according to the report, said she did not want the police to prosecute Jones but “preferred that someone talk to him about his behavior.”
Later that same day, UofL head basketball coach Rick Pitino suspended Jones for the team’s next game at Syracuse for violating an unspecific team rule. The Cardinals lost the game the following day, 69-59, but Jones was reinstated for the team’s next game at home against the University of Miami on Saturday. Jones went on to score 17 points in a 55-53 victory for the Cardinals.
The next day on Sunday, UofL Athletics spokesman Kenny Klein released a brief message saying, “Chris Jones has been dismissed from the University of Louisville men’s basketball team. There will be no comment on the matter.”
Neither Pitino nor Jones has commented on the second dismissal or pending police report.
