The Reds announced that second baseman Brandon Phillips will miss about six weeks after surgery for a torn thumb ligament. Phillips suffered the injury while trying to make a diving defensive play to field an Anthony Rizzo groundball.

It’s the four-time Gold Glove winner’s first spot on the disabled list since he broke a finger in 2008. Phillips has hit .272/.308/.392 with 19 doubles and seven home runs in 86 games this year. He’s played an average of 150 games per season since 2006 and has missed just five games this year.

“It is a big blow. Brandon is a big two-way player. He has hit in the middle of the order most of the year. Defensively, he has been spectacular. It is a blow, but we’ll weather it,” Reds manager Bryan Price said.
