"Bengals beat Bengals"; 18-16

Carlos Dunlap stood at his locker after the game distraught. He said it felt like a bad dream. “Bengals beat Bengals. Again,” Dunlap said. Many of his teammates could hardly talk. They were at a loss for words.

A Vontaze Burfict interception with 1:50 left on the clock seemed to win the Bengals the football game. Until it didn’t. The Bengals first offensive snap after the pick, Jeremy Hill fumbled. And the Bengals unraveled. Ben Roethlisberger returned from a shoulder injury to lead the Steelers downfield but not close enough for field goal range without a little help from the Bengals. An incomplete pass to Antonio Brown was followed up with a late shot to Brown’s head by Burfict and a flag was thrown. Then another flag as Adam Jones reacted to Steelers coach Joey Porter in an altercation on the field. Thirty yards in penalties resulted in a 35-yard field goal attempt with 22 seconds left and no timeouts.

“I don’t see how the Bengals don’t win that football game unless we beat ourselves,” said Dunlap. There were plenty of plays left on the field that lost the Bengals the game outside of the final penalties. But after talking all week about keeping their composure and playing between the lines, Saturday night was a continuation of the $147K fine rivalry game between these two teams last month and it cost the Bengals the game.

That’s now five years in a row and seven total first-round playoff losses under Marvin Lewis.
