Beholder, the morning line’s second choice to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic, has been declared out of the race after bleeding following her morning gallop.
Beholder won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at the age of 2 and the Juvenile Distaff one year later. Her trainers hoped she would become the first horse to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Distaff and Classic.
Trainer Richard Mandell made the announcement to reporters and says the decision is precautionary.
“We’ve obviously got some irritated lungs that are vulnerable right now and we cannot take the chance to run her under those circumstances.”
Mandell said they hope to have Beholder in shape to run again next year.
