Amid criticisms, Bobby Petrino explains his view on "grayshirting"

Bobby Petrino has been under fire for the past several days after a controversy stemmed just before National Signing Day.
About 48 hours before he planned to sign with the Cards, longtime UofL commit Matt Colburn was asked to “grayshirt.” By definition, it means he would not sign as part of the 2015 recruiting class and would instead enroll at Louisville in January 2016. The running back did not want to sit out, so he opted not to join the Cards and is still looking for a landing place.
As a result, many have criticized UofL for “abandoning” a recruit so late in the process. But as Coach Petrino explained, “grayshirting” is just part of recruiting. The outcome is not always pretty, but it is a practice used by countless college football programs around the country.
