Major Upset: American Pharoah loses in the Travers Stakes

They call the Travers Stakes the Graveyard of Champions. That title fit Saturday afternoon as Triple Crown Winner American Pharoah was upset in this Saratoga race.
Frosted challenged American Pharoah for much of the mile and a quarter, and while American Pharoah withstood that test, he had nothing left for Keen Ice. Thanks to a late charge, Keen Ice edged past American Pharoah for the victory, with Frosted coming in third. Keen Ice had previously come in second to American Pharoah at the Haskell earlier this month.
Trainer Bob Baffert later said American Pharoah simply did not bring his A game.
American Pharoah’s loss snaps the thoroughbred’s eight race winning streak, but it keeps alive a pattern at the Travers. Only one Triple Crown winner, Whirlaway in 1941, also has won the Travers Stakes.
If it is any consolation to fans of American Pharoah, no winner of the Travers Stakes has ever won the Breeders Cup Classic. Now the big question is where will American Pharoah race next. There are two months between now and the Breeders Cup Classic which takes place at Keeneland in Lexington. Trainer Bob Baffert has several options, including bringing his triple crown winner back to Churchill Downs, or deciding to not race him again until the Breeders Cup Classic on October 31st.
