H.S. FOOTBALL | St. Xavier Names Bowling Green's Kevin Wallace Next Head Coach

St. Xavier High School in Louisville has announced that they have hired Kevin Wallace to be their 19th head football coach. Wallace replaces Will Wolford, who stepped down in December. The Tigers finished 12-3 in 2017, falling to Trinity 38-21 in the 6A state championship game. Wallace comes to St. X from Bowling Green High School, where he compiled a 299-102 overall record, including Kentucky’s second-longest win streak of 48 games from the 2011-2014 seasons. The Kentucky Derby Festival announced on Thursday that there will not be a Derby Festival Basketball Classic in 2018. The Kentucky Derby Festival cited “declining attendance and increasing financial loss” in recent years. “This was not a decision we made lightly,” said Kentucky Derby Festival President and CEO Mike Berry in a press release. “It’s our mission to produce events for the entire community and in this case the community was speaking with their feet. The John Hardin boys basketball team picked up its third win in a row on Tuesday night, beating Elizabethtown 84-81. It was another 20-point performance for Bulldogs’ star guard/forward Mickey Pearson. Pearson, who many believe has a shot to be Kentucky Mr. Basketball, is having a solid season, averaging 27.2 points per game and 11.0 rebounds per game. Danville High School football star D’mauriae VanCleave was named Kentucky Mr. Football on Thursday by the Associated Press. VanCleave helped lead his Admirals to the Class 2A Russell Athletic/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl championship game this season, where they won their first title since 2003. This past season, he accounted for over 1,800 yards of offense, while also scoring 29 all-purpose touchdowns. Trinity High School football head coach Bob Beatty is receiving more recognition after he led his team to the 6A KHSAA State Championship this past season. Beatty was named HighSchoolFootballAmerica.com’s National Coach of the Year on Wednesday. The award is presented jointly with the National High School Coaches Association. New Albany (In.) High School basketball guard Romeo Langford received another accolade on Tuesday afternoon. The five-star recruit was named a member of the East Team roster for the upcoming McDonald’s All-American Game. Langford, the fifth-ranked recruit in the 2018 ESPN 100, is the highest-ranked guard in his recruiting class. He cut his college list to three schools (Indiana, Kansas and Vanderbilt) in November. It’s been a pretty memorable past half-year for Trinity wide receiver Rondale Moore. He helped lead his Shamrocks to the KHSAA 6A State Championship Game this past December, when they beat St. X 38-21. Covington Catholic High School football head coach Eddie Eviston has been nominated by the Cincinnati Bengals for the Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year Award.
