Despite all that has happened surrounding the Louisville basketball program recently, the Cardinals are still expected to have a strong 2017-2018 campaign. Louisville ranks No. 16 in the preseason USA Today Coaches Poll that was released Thursday afternoon. They are one of five ACC teams ranked in the poll. Former Ohio State assistant Greg Paulus is the newest member of the UofL men’s basketball coaching staff. Interim Head Coach David Padgett made the announcement during a press conference on Thursday. Paulus has worked on the basketball staffs at Ohio State and Navy a combined seven years. Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer has designated Friday, September 29 as Wear Red Day in Louisville and is encouraging the public to show their support for the University of Louisville. The Louisville Cardinals improved to 22-5 (10-4) following at 94-90 victory over Virginia Tech Saturday at the Yum Center. Donovan Mitchell led all scorers with 26 points and chipped in 5 rebounds as the Cards were able to withstand a 3 point shooting barrage from the Hokies. Bryan Station retired Shelvin Mack’s #10 jersey that he wore for the Defenders from 2004-2008 last week. As a senior in 2007 and 2008 he averaged nearly 24 points per game, and over 7 rebounds per game. He played his college ball at Butler and was drafted into the NBA in 2011. The #1-ranked Butler Bearettes defeated the #2 Male Lady Bulldogs 85-57 to win their second consecutive Louisville Invitational Tournament Championship; their third in four years and sixth all-time.
