As reported earlier this week, five-star center Mitchell Robinson decided to leave the WKU men’s basketball program for the second time. He had previously been granted a release to transfer a month and a half ago, but he returned to WKU and actually enrolled in fall classes. The Mitchell Robinson era is over at WKU, for the second time. Spectrum News Kentucky confirmed on Sunday night that the five-star recruit has left the Hilltopper men’s basketball program yet again. The news comes on the heels of a Scout.com report from Evan Daniels on Sunday that said Robinson left the program to train and prepare for the NBA Draft. The WKU Hilltoppers were hoping to get the program’s first-ever win against a Big Ten opponent this weekend. But on Saturday night, the Illinois Fighting Illini had something to say about that. The WKU Hilltoppers have one of their biggest games of the season this Saturday night in Champaign, Il. The Hilltoppers (1-0) will take on the Illinois Fighting Illini (1-0) at 8 ET inside Memorial Stadium. It will be the second-ever meeting between the two teams. Mike Sanford picked up his first win as a head coach on Saturday as the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers beat the Eastern Kentucky Colonels in the return of the rivalry game. All week, EKU head coach Mark Elder stressed the importance of controlling the explosive WKU passing game and the Colonels did a fairly decent job at times, finishing the game with more passing yards than the Hilltoppers, but WKU proved to be too much. The 2017-2018 WKU men’s basketball regular season schedule has been revealed. The WKU football team will open up its regular season on Saturday evening against in-state foe EKU. The game will be the first for Mike Sanford as Western Kentucky head coach. “We got an opportunity against a great opponent with a great tradition to get out there and establish how we want to play the game of football,” said Sanford.
