Churchill Downs Racetrack breaks ground on $60M historical racing facility

On Wednesday, Churchill Downs Racetrack broke ground on Derby City Gaming, a $60 million, state-of-the-art historical racing facility. It is the first of its kind in the state and will house 600 historical racing machines, a simulcast wagering area and player’s club reward center. Officials say the goal of the new facility is to strengthen horse racing in Kentucky and grow its customer base. Churchill Downs announces Woodford Reserve as new presenting sponsor of Kentucky Derby

Woodford Reserve is the new presenting sponsor of the Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs announced on Wednesday. Brown-Forman’s bourbon has been the “Official Bourbon of the Kentucky Derby” since 1999. Horse trainer Dale Romans has already accomplished a lot in his career. For example, he was the winning trainer of the 2011 Preakness winner Shackleford. More than likely, he’s about to add another accomplishment to his resume. Romans is three wins away from passing Bill Mott as the all-time winningest trainer at Churchill Downs. The 142nd Running of the Preakness Stakes takes place Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md. Ten thoroughbreds are taking part in the race this year. Of course, most of the eyes will be on Kentucky Derby 143 winner Always Dreaming. The Todd Pletcher-trained horse drew post position four earlier this week. Always Dreaming is the winner of the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby. Lookin At Lee came in second with Battle of Midway finishing third. Always Dreaming, trained by Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher, started the race with 9-2 odds. He finished with jockey John Velazquez aboard, who also won the 2011 Kentucky Derby with Animal Kingdom. Always Dreaming paid out $11.40 on a $2 bet to win. Former UofL basketball player David Levitch did an internship with horse trainer Mark Casse last summer. “I learned a lot,” said Levitch. “You got to get up everyday at four which is tough, but it was fun. They actually won the meet too, so that was fun.” During the internship, Levitch hot walked, gave medicine to a few of the horses and provided support for the Casse’s. “You got to learn to be very responsible back there,” said Levitch.  Read more
