Year End Influencers: Winners of the 2011 Election

Perhaps the most fitting spotlight for the winners of the 2011 campaigns didn’t fall on them on Election Night but on inauguration day for Gov. Steve Beshear.
All of the constitutional officers elected — or re-elected on Nov. 8 — walked down the Capitol steps from the Senate chambers with their significant others during the Grand March on inauguration night. That included the lone Republican, Agriculture Commissioner-elect James Comer, three re-elected Democrats (Beshear, Attorney General Jack Conway and Treasurer Todd Hollenbach) and three new Democratic officials (Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson, Auditor-elect Adam Edelen and Secretary of State-elect Alison Lundergan Grimes).
The event even included key players who weren’t elected in November. Senate President David Williams and House Speaker Greg Stumbo served as co-chairs of the grand march.
Both played key roles in 2011. Williams lost the governor’s race by 20 points to Beshear and Stumbo managed to get through the governor’s race by tacitly supporting Beshear but not poking Williams so as to permanently damage their ability to work together as legislative leaders.
