Under current system, corporations can buy America -- or at least its government, Begala says

07/30/2012 11:14 PM

A $4 billion investment for a mega-corporation could land it control of the U.S. Congress and president thanks the current campaign finance landscape, said Democratic strategist Paul Begala.

Begala explained how a corporation could exploit the system that allows corporations to make unlimited contributions to groups aimed at influencing elections. (6:50)

Begala and William Kristol, the editor of the Weekly Standard and a contributor to Fox News, were in Kentucky earlier this month to speak at the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce annual meeting in Louisville.

Begala, the former consultant to President Bill Clinton, is currently leading a super PAC that is supporting President Barack Obama. He said he’d rather be put out of business by a change in the law.

Kristol, however, argued the system is currently “healthier.” Hear why at 4:00 of the interview.

This segment started with a question about whether Obama will try to target Republican congressional leaders, such as Kentucky U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, as foils in this fall’s election. Clinton successfully did that in 1996 by jabbing at then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Begala will never admit this….but Big Government, Big Banks, and Big Corporations are in bed together. Any government legislation which increases their power and influence over smaller entities…they support fully. Notice, if you will, how all the government bail-out money went to these “Biggies,” and none to small, average American companies, banks, etc.

What happened to democracy when corporations were given this much power? Money buys our elections. How many request have you gotten from the political parties to contribute to the election? Many and often. The rich win and the middleclass which is shrinking and the poor lose their voice. Let us get rid of the electorial college and have the popular vote win. Many corporations have moved their base out of America hurting our work force and now they are buying elections to control our government. The Supreme Court was wrong. Get corprations out of our elections and return it to the people.
