The grandmother of Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes and mother of former Democratic Party Chairman Jerry Lundergan died Thursday. Thelma Lundergan McHugh was 92.
McHugh, who worked in the Mason County Sheriff’s office for more than 20 years, passed away at her home in Jessamine County, according to a statement from Grimes’ office.
Grimes featured her grandmothers in campaign for secretary of state last year. Both of her grandmothers signed her candidacy filing papers — as she was often quick to point out — and the starred in her first campaign commercial of the general election.
The ad, which began airing three weeks before the election, was one of the most memorable ads of an otherwise forgettable election cycle.
