FRANKFORT — State Sen. Brandon Smith, R-Hazard, is spending his first week back in the state Capitol becoming reacquainted with the Kentucky State Police — the 47-year old lawmaker was arrested Tuesday evening for driving under the influence.
WYMT-TV was first to report the arrest which occurred around 9 p.m. on Tuesday evening.
Initial reports say the Kentucky State Police pulled Smith over for speeding and suspected Smith had been drinking. Smith refused a breathalyzer and was booked by KSP.
When asked about the incident in the state Capitol Wednesday, Smith said he wanted to talk about the incident but refused under advice from his legal counsel.
Smith said he did not think the incident would cause him any political duress.
“I think the people in my district know me. I’ve run up there. I’ve coached their kids and they’ve been my neighbors,” Smith said.
