As he waited in line to make his way to the legislative boxes at the Kentucky Derby Rep. Michael Meredith, R-Brownsville, said the race highlights the state.

“It’s a showcase of our great commonwealth, and it’s always great to be here,” Meredith said.

The GOP lawmaker said that he liked Gunnevera in the Kentucky Derby, and the story behind Patch, who lost an eye, but thought the field was open this year in the Run for the Roses.

Earlier in the week the U.S. House of Representatives narrowly moved replacement health care legislation out of the lower chamber, but Meredith does not believe the move will have much impact here in Kentucky.

“I think it depends on what the Senate does and what they try to work with when it gets over to them,” he said, adding that as those in Frankfort know that many changes happen to legislation between the two legislative bodies.

While not many constituents have contacted Meredith with concerns over the bill, he said he does know of fears over pre-existing conditions not being covered in new legislation.
