Rep. Kay announces run for Woodford Co. Judge Executive

Another Democratic House lawmaker, Rep. James Kay, of Versailles, will not seek re-election next year, instead opting to run for a local office.

The attorney will seek to replace current Woodford County Judge-Executive John Coyle who will retire at the end of the year. Kay first joined the legislature in 2013 replacing former Education Committee Chairman Rep. Carl Rollins, who resigned after being promoted to be director of the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority.

Kay announced his run for local office on social media outlets on Tuesday.

The Versailles Democrat had side-stepped questions about his future in the General Assembly, when asked by Pure Politics in 2017.

Kay’s departure from the General Assembly will create yet another open seat race in 2018. Republican Daniel Fister, R-Versailles, has once again filed for the partial Fayette, partial Franklin and Woodford Co. District. Joe Graviss, a McDonald’s franchisee from Versailles, is filing for the Democratic primary.
