State Rep. Dan Johnson commits suicide

State Rep. Dan Johnson, who was accused of molesting a teenager in 2013, has committed suicide, WDRB News reported Wednesday.

Johnson’s death comes a day after he categorically denied the allegation, which were first reported by the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting. fir A 21-year-old woman told the outlet that Johnson forcibly kissed her and fondled her beneath her clothes on Jan. 1, 2013, at Johnson’s church when she was 17.

Bullitt County Sheriff Donnie Tinnell told WDRB that Johnson took his life on a Mt. Washington bridge and that authorities had recovered the gun.

Johnson posted a message on Facebook hours before his death. From the WDRB report:

WFPL reported Tuesday that Louisville Metro Police had reopened its investigation into the sexual abuse allegations against Johnson, who had rejected calls from top Republicans and Democrats alike for his resignation in light of the accusation.

Gov. Matt Bevin offered his condolences to Johnson’s family on Twitter.


Republican Party of Kentucky Chairman Mac Brown also offered his condolences.

“This is a tragic situation,” he said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Dan Johnson.”
