SHELBYVILLE – Longtime State Rep. Brad Montell, R-Shelbyville, announced Tuesday that he would not seek re-election to the 58th District seat in the Kentucky House of Representatives.
Montell, 58, who was first elected to the chamber in 2002, and took office in January 2003, will serve out his 7th term in office before stepping down.
Montell simply felt that after 14 years, it was time to retire.
“I’ve toyed with this thought for several years now knowing that the time was getting close,” Montell said. “I enjoy working in the legislature. I enjoy policy work, so I will miss it.”
Montell, who was one of the leading legislators in crafting the 2013 public pension reform legislation and a member of the Kentucky Employee Retirement System Blue Ribbon Task Force, admits that it was a tough decision.
“You know, I wrestled with it,” Montell said. “I don’t feel like I was elected to make this a career and so, you know, I don’t know that I agree with term limits but I see a lot of value in that.”
Montell admitted that, being in the minority, made it tough to craft a lot of legislation.
He feels that the most notable legislation that he authored was the “No Pass-No Drive” bill for 16 and 17-year-old high school students who must have passing grades to get their driver’s license. Montell feels even stronger about the many issues that he worked on over the years.
“Pension issues, education reform issues that I’m passionate about, you know those were important and continue to be,” Montell said.
Montell says that he has no plans to seek another political office, but could see himself working on the policy side of state government.
“Perhaps working alongside a governor or a caucus,” Montell said. “I don’t think that I have interest in pursuing anything additionally. I certainly don’t at this point.”
