Rep. Alecia Webb-Edgington to announce Monday she'll run for Congress

Republican State Rep. Alecia Webb-Edgington of Fort Wright confirmed Sunday evening that she will officially announce Monday that she will run for the GOP nomination for the open 4th congressional district.

UPDATED 7:48 a.m.: Webb-Edgington said in a statement that she seeks to “follow the example” of four-term Congressman Geoff Davis and former Republican congressman and U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning.

Webb-Edgington will file paperwork on Monday with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance to begin raising money, according to the campaign statement.

She is the first one to declare her candidacy since Thursday’s surprise announcement that Davis, R-Hebron, wouldn’t run again in 2012.

Webb-Edgington, the Republican Party’s 4th congressional district chairwoman, is a retired state police major who has served in the General Assembly since 2008.

Other Republicans considering running include Lewis County Judge-Executive Thomas Massie, Boone County Clerk Kenny Brown, Oldham County-based lobbyist Hunter Bates and lawyer Marcus Carey, a former vice chairman of the state Republican Party.

The Kentucky Enquirer’s Amanda Van Benschoten reported that Democrats will field a candidate in the race. She mentioned Nathan Smith, a businessman and former Democratic Party vice chairman; Campbell County Commissioner Ken Rechtin, Edgewood lawyer Patrick Hughes and former candidate for state representative Linda Klembara.
