BURLINGTON – A document signed by the ninth President of the United States, William Henry Harrison, has been discovered in the collection of the county records stored in the Boone County Courthouse.

The document, a bond for an estate from 1825 was discovered by Boone County historian James Duvall, who has been contracted by Boone County Clerk Kenny Brown, to go though the documents and identify, catalogue, and begin to preserve many of the more notable and valuable items in the collection, some which date back to 1799.

Though research, Brown notes that Harrison spent a fair amount of time in the greater Cincinnati area.

“He was still doing business in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky, obviously with the document that we’ve found, the estate bond that he signed here,” Brown said.

Brown’s goal is to allow easier public better and easier access to the documents without the potential of damaging them.

Brown says that deciding what items to preserve depends on several factors.

“Importance and the vulnerability of it,” Brown said. “What documents are going to lose here if we don’t act right now, and get it out of the public’s hands and get it preserved the right way? And looking at the value of it — We looked at the presidential document signed by William Henry Harrison, its worth from $3,000 to $50,000 on the market.”

Duvall says the deeds and indentures are the most valuable items in the collection.

“They are the most valuable items that we have because the entire county ownership is based on those early land grants and those documents,” Duvall said.

The cost to preserve the record books depends on the size and condition of the documents and is being funded by the Boone County Clerk’s office.

So far, approximately $3,000 has been spent on the project.
