Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles met with President Trump and others, including Ivanka Trump at the White House on Monday as the administration unveiled a sweeping proposal to rework infrastructure in the United States.

Quarles, who was the lone state agriculture commissioner at the unveiling of the plan on Monday, lauded the $200 billion plan which would set aside $50 billion in block grants for projects in rural America. Trump intends on generating up to $1.5 trillion in total with the use of state and private money for infrastructure projects.

The Republican Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner hopes the Commonwealth can make use of the block grants to build and modernize infrastructure, establish high-speed internet access, as well as repair existing roads, bridges, locks, and dams, and construct new ones.

“I think this is a great idea, whenever you can return control to state and local government, particularly, when it comes to prioritizing infrastructure projects,” he said, adding that Kentucky could benefit on building out internet access to rural Kentucky.

According to some reports, the block grants would be doled out based on miles of rural roads and the extent of the rural population. Quarles sees the plan as an opportunity for Gov. Matt Bevin, R-Kentucky, and others to tailor a specific proposal to capture some of those funds.
