McConnell on Akin: Campaign is toast after mistake of 'gargantuan proportions'

As the deadline passed for Todd Akin to withdrawal from the U.S. Senate race in Missouri, U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell predicted doom for his campaign saying it has “no future.”

But McConnell wouldn’t say whether he thought losing the Missouri race would cost the GOP control of the Senate after the Nov. 6 election.

Speaking with Pure Politics after meeting with hospital employees in Louisville, McConnell referred to his statement earlier calling on Akin to drop out of the race. That came a day after McConnell had urged Akin to “reconsider” his run.

McConnell said Akin’s statement about abortion on a political talk show Sunday was a “mistake of gargantuan proportions.” Akin said a woman’s body can prevent pregnancy in the instance of “legitimate rape.”

Akin didn’t and pledged in radio shows that he planned “to stay in it to win” against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.

McConnell wouldn’t say whether he has talked to Akin directly.
