Sixteen years ago terrorists attacked the United States and forever changed the country.

On Monday, state elected leaders released videos reflecting on the events of September 11, 2001.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, released a video message on Monday honoring first responders and families of the victims.

“Today, we remember the victims of the horrific terrorist attacks of September 11th.” McConnell narrates in the video. “We honor their families. We show our gratitude for the courageous men and women who put their lives in harm’s way every single day to keep us safe.”

“And as one nation, we reaffirm our promise: we will never forget.”

Gov. Matt Bevin, R-Kentucky, also released a video message from his social media account on Monday.

Bevin relates his story from that day, telling viewers he was in California at the time of the attack.

“What was interesting out of such tragedy is that in that moment America came together like never before — a celebration of our American values, a willingness to band together,” he said.
