Kentucky Democrats ready to bring party's messages home from Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — The speeches by President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton predictably made the list of most memorable remarks for many of the Kentucky delegates at last week’s Democratic National Convention.

But so did the addresses by Army Veteran Tammy Duckworth, who lost her legs serving in Iraq, as well as the speech by former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who had the Time Warner Cable Arena rocking as she emphatically listed the automotive industry jobs saved or created in many states.

A few Kentucky Democrats stayed through nearly all of the speeches over the three days. That group included Bowling Green Democrat Michele Thomas and state Rep. Darryl Owens of Louisville.

Here’s what Owens said after the convention ended about what overarching message Kentucky Democrats should take away from it:

Thomas, a Bowling Green Democrat, said voters in her area should be grateful for the president’s support of the auto bailout that very well may have saved General Moters’ Corvette plant in Bowling Green.

And Dennis Repenning, a Northern Kentucky attorney attending his first convention, got to carry out the Kentucky sign from the delegation’s seating area — the political version of taking down the goal posts.

Here was his reaction to the week:

First, an obvious fact. Obama is not going to win Kentucky. It’s a foregone conclusion. He came within 16 points of losing to “Uncommitted” in the 2012 DEMOCRATIC primary. That’s the Democrats voting in an uncontested election! Any Democratic politicians in Kentucky talking up Obama 2012 can’t seriously be thinking he’ll win. Maybe they aren’t playing to win and they’re only trying to beat the spread?

Unfortunately, in the two party disaster that is American politics, Obama losing Kentucky will mean Romney winning Kentucky. Honestly, we might as well vote for Obama. Thanks establishment GOP oligarchy for giving us no real choice… again.

The world has been denied the opportunity to see the real Darryl Owens, when the YouTube video “Darryl Owens Runs From Constituents” was apparently removed. I was there in the Capitol Annex that day and made my own video. Maybe I’ll upload it. But be prepared. It’s shameful. Hiding in a suite of offices hoping your constituents will go away is not very brave. Running from constituents to avoid talking with them is not very Democratic.
