House Minority Floor Leader not concerned about growing list of Democrats not seeking re-election

FRANKFORT – A number of House Democrats, led by 43-year veteran Rep. Jody Richards, D-Bowling Green, have decided not to seek ree-lection this year, but
House Minority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins, D-Sandy Hook, isn’t overly surprised by the announcements.

Adkins, who has served in the House since 1987, said he hates to see all of that experience go, but he’s hopeful that new blood will re-energize his party
and bring new ideas to the General Assembly.

The Sandy Hook Democrat doesn’t necessarily believe the exodus is a result of Democrats now being in the minority in the chamber.

“Many of our members who are retiring have not just been talking about it for the last week or the last month, many of these members have been debating this for the last four to six years,” Adkins said. “Some of those members, we’ve had to encourage to run again in the past, now have made a decision to not run again.”

Adkins says the Democrats have been active across the state and he’s looking forward to making up ground in the November election and he says that his party has been doing a good job recruiting quality candidates to run for seats.

“I can tell you what makes you have the ability to win in the political arena is great candidates, and I do believe that we have great candidates who are enthused, who have fire in their belly, that want to run for these offices all across Kentucky.”
