Hoover resigns as House Speaker with fiery floor speech condemning Gov. Bevin and others

For a second time, Rep. Jeff Hoover, R-Jamestown, has resigned as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

On Monday, Hoover made an impassioned speech from the House Floor condemning characterizations made against him by Gov. Matt Bevin, R-Kentucky, and others — seemingly pointing to House Republican Communication Director Daisy Olivo who alleges that a female colleague took part in a “sexual relationship” with Hoover.

Hoover, said that he never had sex with the former staffer, and that both Bevin and the staffer, who he said was smirking as he spoke, were telling “lies from hell.”

The Republican ended his speech submitting his formal resignation as Speaker of the House to the body for their consideration.

“I hear by resign as Speaker of the House, to become effective, if accepted by the members of this body,” Hoover said. “I’m not resigning my position as state representative for my friends and constituents in the 83rd District.”

Mac Brown, Chairman of the Republican Party of Kentucky said Hoover followed through with his word.

“This has been a very difficult and emotional time for all concerned,” Brown said in a statement. “Jeff Hoover has followed through with his word. We now look forward the General Assembly moving on to address the important work ahead of them.”

If only I had a tub of popcorn nearby. Folks what is happening in the republican party in Frankfort is surely a sight to behold. The infighting. The backstabbing. The gossip. It has all the makings of a great film. Many of us saw this coming from a mile away. The Governor, often touting his own talent and his personal calling from God to serve, is a one man army. He does not extend loyalty to anyone other than himself…not the repubicans in the House, not even those in the Senate who refuse to stand up to him. Hoover, with all his faults, was the only person in Frankfort who challenged Bevin and held him accountable for the vile things he has said about pubic service workers. And when Hoover did that, he created a huge target on his back. The feet on the ground up there pretty much all agree that the exposure of this mess was orchestrated by Bevin himself with the help of a few other insiders who were promised fame and fortune by Bevin. What they should know, and what the rest of us already know, is that Bevin only needs you when he needs you and when you are done doing his bidding, he discards you faster than his promises about sharing his tax records.

Personally I am finding at least a little joy in all of this. After all, the republican majority came into office promising to change the landscape, to change the tone and do the work of the people. Well, what this has taught us is that no matter the party affiliation, absolute power corrupts absolutely. It’s time for some balance to our legislature and I can’t wait to close the gap come November.
