Grimes radio ad claims McConnell is working to take away voting rights

UPDATED: The campaign of Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes is reaching out to different demographics, including the urban areas of the state with a radio ad claiming McConnell is not only implementing policies hurtful to the communities but also trying to take away their right to vote.
Politico was first to report on the ad, which they say is running in Louisville and likely other areas of the state. In the ad, which can be heard below, a man tells listeners that Grimes is a “champion” for civil rights while also bashing McConnell for many things Grimes has hit him on before plus a claim that the senator is working to silence the voices of the African-American community.
“Worst of all, Mitch McConnell has been leading the Republican effort to take away our voting rights,” the man in the ad says. “Just like he blocked everything from getting done in Washington, he’s blocking the ballot box and trying to silence our voices.”

Votes cited for the claim in the ad include a vote in 2002 against extending voting rights to felons who have served their full term, an issue Kentucky U.S. Sen. Rand Paul has recently been advocating for. Another bill introduced by McConnell aimed at requiring identification to be shown in order to vote is also cited.
The McConnell campaign said the ad reaches to “disgusting depths.”
“This is the kind of ad an unscrupulous, losing candidate may have considered running fifty years ago that we all collectively hoped was left in the past. Alison Lundergan Grimes is proving she will sink to disgusting depths in order to preserve her troubled candidacy,” McConnell spokeswoman Allison Moore said in a statement.
Here is the full script of the 60-second spot:
“There’s a lot at stake in this year’s election. If Mitch McConnell and the Republicans win, we lose. Mitch McConnell has been getting rich in Washington, raising his own pay while blocking a higher minimum wage for our community, and as unemployment skyrockets, Mitch even said it’s not his job to bring jobs to our community. Worst of all, Mitch McConnell has been leading the Republican effort to take away our voting rights. Just like he blocked everything from getting done in Washington, he’s blocking the ballot box and trying to silence our voices. We need a champion in Washington who will get things done for us. That’s why our community and faith leaders are supporting Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes. Alison has a real plan to create jobs and raise the minimum wage, and Alison has been a champion for civil rights and tearing down barriers to the ballot box. On Nov. 4, vote Alison Lundergan Grimes.”
