Democratic nominee for secretary of state Alison Lundergan Grimes didn’t scrimp on the enthusiasm in her victory speech Tuesday night as she sought to reach out to about every core group of voters in Kentucky.

She mentioned Kentucky-based troops, veterans, unions and business owners. She spoke of victims of domestic violence — whom she has pledged to help by pushing to allow them to use secretary of state’s address on their voter registration information to protect their privacy.

Grimes dotted her remarks with shout-outs to individual supporters and officials, such as state Sen. Kathy Stein, Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo and Congressman Ben Chandler.

She highlighted her trips to see voters in the east and the west and promised to support seniors and help young people engage in civics.

She even mentioned reaching out to Republicans and independents.

About the only person not included in her victory speech was Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear, who backed Grimes’ opponent in the primary, Elaine Walker.

Of course, Beshear, who spoke in Frankfort about an hour before Grimes, didn’t mention Grimes by name in his remarks either.

Grimes, 32, also said her 10-point victory over Walker is just the beginning of her journey.

“People always ask, ‘Are you tired yet?’ And the answer is ‘No,’ friends. We have just begun. Kentucky needs and deserves, yes, to have someone with fresh energy and enthusiasm — bold leadership, and yes, democratic values to help bring us where we need to be,” Grimes said.

Her remarks also hinted that state leaders have work to do in improving Kentucky’s standing and said she wants to be a part of that.

“I don’t accept that where we are now is where we are meant to be forever,” she said. “I believe Kentucky’s brightest days are ahead of us.”
