LOUISVILLE – Gov. Matt Bevin awarded his first Governor’s Cup trophy after the University of Kentucky’s 41-38 win over the University of Louisville on a last-minute field goal on Saturday, and he said the rivalry game represented the best of “Kentucky football.”
The first-term Republican said Saturday’s game was a “great thing to be a part of.”
“Let me just tell you this, that is Kentucky football, and I mean UK Kentucky, but Kentucky period,” he told cn|2 while walking off the field after the game.
“What a ballgame. I hope everybody on ESPN loved it because this was phenomenal. This was an amazing ballgame. This is what we walk about when we talk about in-state rivalries.”
Bevin had been careful not to pick one team over the other earlier in the week, although he said there’s part of him “that likes to see the underdog surprise people.” The Wildcats entered the game as 28-point underdogs.
