Gov. Beshear shrugs off Comer's comments as being 'just politics'

ERLANGER — Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear on Monday shrugged off critical comments from Commissioner of Agriculture James Comer, a Republican, as being red meat for a partisan crowd and said the two will continue to work with each other.

Comer told a crowd of Republicans at the Spencer County Lincoln Day Dinner on Friday that
Beshear, a Democrat in his second term, exhibited “complacency” and “mediocrity” and had few goals for the 2013 legislative session.

“I know he’s thinking about running for something and those are the kind of comments that you make when you’re thinking about running for something,” Beshear said on Monday. He defended his administration by saying it has shepherded Kentucky through tough economic times, which was the main theme of his successful 2011 re-election.

Beshear was in Northern Kentucky to announce that Newly Weds Foods, an international manufacturer and distributor of food ingredients, will invest $57 million for a plant in Erlanger which will create 115 jobs.
