Inside the fundraising: AG Conway out-raises challenger, but P'Pool has more cash on hand

With the 2011 general election for attorney general already set, both the incumbent Jack Conway and challenger Todd P’Pool are stocking up on cash in preparation for the November election.
Neither Conway, a Democrat running for re-election, or P’Pool, the Republican Hopkins County Attorney, have opposition in the May 17 primaries.
Conway spent the last three months collecting donations from reliable Democratic sources as well as a few big fundraising events to out-raise P’Pool by $50,000 for the quarter.
But P’Pool, who has actively campaigned since filing, is holding onto to previously raised money and a $250,000 loan to himself to have a strong war chest. P’Pool leads Conway with available cash by more than $190,000, according to their campaign reports filed with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance.
Here’s a breakdown of the head-to-head numbers:

P’Pool, who is running his first statewide race, tapped many stalwart Republican donors such as Donald Ball, CEO of Ball Homes; Jess Correll, President of First Southern National Bank; and R. Wood Northup, CEO of Radio Sound Inc. and husband of former U.S. Rep. Anne Northup.
But P’Pool also received cash from former Louisville mayor candidate and councilman Hal Heiner, who made the max $1,000 donation as did his wife, Sheila. And former 6th Congressional District challenger Andy Barr gave $250 to the P’Pool campaign. So did Hunter Bates, a lobbyist and former statewide candidate.

P’Pool also received the maximum $1,000 donation from the political action committees of two big Republicans. The Bluegrass Committee, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s PAC, donated to P’Pool as well as the Free and Strong America PAC, led by former Massachusetts governor and presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
McConnell is also expected to headline an April 28 fundraiser in Madisonville, Ky., for P’Pool. McConnell’s former Kentucky director, Larry Cox, is working as P’Pool’s campaign chairman.
As far as expenditures, P’Pool spent more than $20,000 on campaign staff and $4,663 for website hosting, development and e-mail blasts to Brushfire Digital. And the campaign spent $1,620 on tickets to the various Republican Lincoln Day Dinners spread out over primary season across the state.
What boosted P’Pool the most during the latest reporting period between January and April 15, 2011, were seven fund-raisers held during that time. The two highest grossing fundraisers were held at the polar ends of the reporting period: a Jan. 21 fund-raiser held by J. McCauley Brown of Brown-Forman brought in $10,750 while an April 7 fund-raiser held by Matrix Energy Vice President Ted McGinnis in Inez, Ky. pulled in $19,100.
For Conway, his report isn’t much different. The incumbent received much of his support from former candidates, current Democrats and their reliable fund-raisers.
Britt Brockmann, chair of the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees gave Conway the maximum $1,000 donation.
Kentucky Democratic Party chair Dan Logsdon gave Conway $1,000 as did Conway’s former consultant, Mark Riddle.

Conway also benefited from the help of various political action committees, including $1,000 from the Kentucky Forward PAC, chaired by U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler of Central Kentucky.
Conway also received the max donation ($1,000) from KEPAC, the political action committee of the Kentucky Education Association; Teamsters Local 89 in Louisville; the United Mine Workers of America; Echostar Corp. and Dish Network PAC and the Comcast Corp. PAC.
Because he is not actively campaigning, Conway’s expenditures weren’t notable as he does not have an active staff and isn’t spending money on mailings or advertising.
To make up for the lack of an active campaign, Conway relied heavily on four large fund-raisers, three sponsored by his campaign in Washington D.C., Northern Kentucky and Conway’s hometown of Louisville and a fourth by a couple in New Orleans.
On March 6, Conway’s campaign raised $20,954 in Washington D.C. without a cost to the campaign.
The Northern Kentucky fund-raiser pulled in $9,895 and the Louisville fundraiser, held at 21c Hotel, brought in $61,230. The April 8 New Orleans fund-raiser, hosted by Martin and Angela Maley, raised $10,500.
