Fmr. Gov. Steve Beshear goes on attack against Rebecca Johnson in 49th Dist. special election

Former Gov. Steve Beshear, D-Kentucky, is bashing the Republican candidate in the special election to replace Rep. Dan Johnson, R-Mt. Washington, who took his own life last year.

In an email sent to Democratic supporters, Beshear is calling on party faithful to get out and vote, and donate to Democratic nominee Linda Belcher in the election and to fight back against what he is calling the current political reality.

“Racists, sexual predators, liars, criminals have no place serving in public office,” Beshear wrote in the email. “There was a time when everyone, regardless of political party, would have unambiguously agreed with such a statement. Unfortunately we’re living in a new reality.”

In the email, Beshear singles out the Republican nominee, Rebecca Johnson, the widow of the former Representative as being “unapologetic for her husband’s racism, deception and hypocrisy.”

Johnson’s death came a day after he categorically denied a molestation allegation, which was first reported by the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting. A 21-year-old woman told the outlet that Johnson forcibly kissed her and fondled her beneath her clothes on Jan. 1, 2013, at Johnson’s church when she was 17.

Jeffrey Klusmeier, a close friend of the Johnson’s and a campaign advisor for Rebecca, told Pure Politics on Wednesday he believes the story against Dan was “tainted.”

Klusmeier said that Beshear was using the allegations against Johnson for political gain in the Feb. 20 special election.

Johnson has raised more than $7,000 so-far in the campaign, and has $4,029 in the bank, according to 15-day pre-election reports filed with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance. Belcher has raised $36,295 and has $30,123 on hand, according to KREF.
