Fmr. Bevin staffer, daughter of lawmaker says she was sent inappropriate messages by Rep. Meredith

The daughter of Rep. Wesley Morgan, R-Richmond, told Pure Politics on Wednesday that she was sexually harassed by Rep. Michael Meredith, R-Oakland, during her time working in the Capitol.

Jordan Morgan, who is the former Deputy Press Secretary for Gov. Matt Bevin and now a lawyer in Northern Kentucky, sent Pure Politics three images she says shows Meredith did sexually harass her; she says others currently working in the General Assembly have also been harassed by members of both the Republican and Democratic Party. Morgan said there were also texts between she and Meredith, but those text messages were not saved on her phone.

In the messages sent to Morgan from Meredith in 2016, Meredith comments on Morgan’s looks and tells her that 5’10” can “probably get everything I need done.”

Meredith also called her “beauty” in another message sent through social media at nearly 4:00 AM after Bevin won the governor’s mansion — Morgan worked on Bevin’s campaign in 2015. Morgan told Pure Politics that Meredith tried to kiss her the evening that Bevin won the election.

Pure Poltics reached out to Meredith for a comment but did not get an immediate response.

In a phone conversation with Pure Politics on Wednesday, Morgan said that harassment “runs rampant throughout the legislature.” She also said that harassment is difficult to deal with in the General Assembly, because the last thing many staffers want to do is make things awkward with sitting lawmakers, and she said many want to get along with lawmakers and not upset them.

Morgan said she was forced to laugh off instances of harassment to maintain her status in the Capitol.

Morgan is calling on all members who took part in the settlement with the staffer to resign immediately.

Meredith is one of four lawmakers implicated in a sexual harassment settlement with a former House staffer. Three others include former House Speaker Jeff Hoover, who resigned days after a Courier-Journal report citing the settlement. Others accused of sexual harassment, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader were Republican Reps. Jim DeCesare, and Brian Linder.

Morgan said she had never been sexually harassed by Bevin, or anyone working in the Governor’s office. She called the administration “extremely professional.”

Rep. Morgan also alleged the harassment took place when speaking to a radio host on Wednesday afternoon. Morgan called on Hoover to resign during the interview, and alluded to the harassment of his daughter.

“My daughter worked in the Governor’s office the same time I was in the legislature or in the session, and she had informed me of a few situations about texting, and so forth that involved her,” he said. “What you’ve got to look at is the biggest question is someone who is subordinate of someone else.”
