DSCC targets McConnell's time in office in new TV ad

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has made fodder of Kentucky U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell’s five terms in office in a new television spot released Tuesday.
The ad comes on the heels of the latest Bluegrass Poll, in which 57 percent of its 730 respondents said McConnell had been in office too long and should be replaced.
“During his nearly three decades in Washington, Mitch McConnell has consistently put himself first while ignoring Kentucky,” Justin Barasky, spokesman for the DSCC, said in a statement. “McConnell voted to raise his own pay and enjoyed special perks while incomes fell in Kentucky, jobs were lost and families struggled. Kentuckians deserve a Senator that puts them first, not Mitch McConnell, who clearly embodies everything that’s wrong with Washington.”
The ad looks at how McConnell has benefited from his place in Congress, including votes on congressional pay raises and speaking fees collected from special interest groups before the practice was outlawed in 1991. The spot then shifts to a look at how Kentucky has fared in the past 30 years, quoting U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistic figures on declining incomes and thousands of lost manufacturing jobs.
“Sure seems Mitch has Washington working for him and not us,” the ad’s narrator says.

The spot is part of the DSCC’s $1.4 million, two-week ad campaign in Kentucky’s contentious U.S. Senate race between McConnell and Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes.
Barasky told Pure Politics last week when the DSCC launched its advertising push that McConnell’s unpopularity will likely be a central theme for the group’s messaging until Election Day.
