County Connections: Otter Creek rebirth, a blessing for outdoor enthusiasts

BRANDENBURG – When Otter Creek Park in Meade County was closed because of budget constraints by the city of Louisville in 2009, residents of Meade, Hardin, and southwest Jefferson counties felt a void as their retreat was no longer available for them to fish, hike, picnic and enjoy the outdoors.

In May, 2011, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources took over operation of the eastern Meade County Park and once again welcomed guests to get away from it all.

Dirk Steenbergen, of Kentucky Fish and Wildlife says when his department took over the park; they had to address a lot of neglect.

“It had been abandoned for about 3 years with nobody here, so a lot of people came in and “borrowed” a bunch of things from the buildings and marked their names on the windows, so there’s a lot of going out and cleaning up the old mess,” Steenbergen said. “There’s a lot of older buildings that we’re going to have to tear down.”

Despite the signs of neglect in the park, the recreation area has much to offer visitors.

“We have camping for horseback riders along with 14 miles of horse trails, we have around 30 miles of hikeable trails, 27-hole disc golf course, our beautiful trout stream, and nice vistas of the Ohio River,” Steenbergen said.

An historic centerpiece of the park is Morgan’s Cave, a cave with an actively flowing stream that was reputed to be a hideaway for Morgan’s Raiders during the Civil War. The cave is now kept locked for the protection of the bat population that lives inside.
