Comer releases first campaign ad of 2015 highlighting achievements as ag commissioner

In his first ad of the Republican primary race for governor, James Comer is highlighting his credentials as a conservative with a record of reducing government spending and improving the Kentucky Department of Agriculture.

In the advertisement, which began airing Wednesday, Comer refers to himself as a “blue-collar guy” with a history of improving efficiency in government.

“The average Kentuckian is having to do more with less,” Comer says in the ad. “We’re going to have to have the same mentality, and I’ll bring that type of common sense to the governor’s office.”

A week after taking over the Department of Agriculture in 2012 Comer called in state Auditor Adam Edelen and his team to look through the books, management and structure of the KDA as former Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer left it — an investigation that landed Farmer in federal prison.

Comer also closed the fuel lab at the KDA, outsourcing the testing to private businesses — a move Comer and officials within the department said save taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, which the ad references.

The launch of the ad makes Comer the second contestant in the race to hit the airwaves ahead of the May 19 primary. Former Louisville Metro Council member Hal Heiner has already aired three ads since the beginning of the year.

Comer is vying for the Republican gubernatorial nomination against Heiner, former U.S. Senate candidate Matt Bevin and former state Supreme Court Justice Will T. Scott.
