Churchill Downs announces new parking plan for Derby Week

Those making plans to attend races at Churchill Downs Derby Week will want to pay attention to changes in the area that will affect parking and entering the track.

Track officials have announced a new website,, to help guests navigate the new information and plan their arrival. They say the new parking and traffic plan is designed to expand parking capacity and shuttle service, but also enhance the surrounding neighborhood as well.

“We’re including a lot of new things there, a lot of green space. We’re planting in the neighborhood of 930 trees in that area,” said John Asher, Vice President of Racing Communications at Churchill Downs. “Also, a lot of things that really do good things not just for the property here at Churchill Downs but the neighborhood. There’s a new storm water drainage infrastructure there. There are bioswales there to process rainwater and things of that nature.”

Notable Changes to Parking

  • Onsite parking reserved from April 28 – May 5
  • Central Avenue between Crittenden Drive and Taylor Boulevard will be restricted to official shuttle buses on May 3 (Thurby), and closed to the public on May 4 (Oaks) and May 5 (Derby)
  • Free shuttles for guests with reserved parking at Kentucky Expo Center
  • Papa John’s shuttles only running April 28, May 1-2
