Former U.S. Sen. Wendell Ford is bringing in former President Bill Clinton on March 6 to help raise money for the Government Education Center in Owensboro that bears Ford’s name.

The center sponsors programs aimed at teaching young people about civics and government and encouraging them to get involved in politics, according to the center’s site. It’s located at the Owensboro Museum of Science and History.

Ford said in a statement he hopes to build up enough money to sustain the center and its program for generations.

“One of my remaining personal goals is to help fund an endowment for the center so that it can have financial stability in the years ahead,” said Ford, who is 88. “We need to encourage more interest in government at all levels, and I want the good work the center is doing to continue long after I’m gone.”

Ford called Clinton “one of the truly great presidents in our nation’s history.”

While Ford and Clinton clashed over the approach to the tobacco buyout bill in the 1990s, the two were largely allies. As Democratic whip, Ford helped push some of Clinton’s proposals through the U.S. Senate.

The fundraiser will be held at the RiverPark Center in downtown Owensboro. Tickets for dinner and a reception with Clinton will cost $1,000, table sponsorships are going for $10,000 and $25,000 will buy an event sponsorship, according to a press release.
