Bevin, Stumbo clash in ads running in 95th District

House Speaker Greg Stumbo has faced many a Republican foe in his 36 years in public office, but in his latest election the Prestonsburg Democrat is battling being linked to the top of the Democratic ticket, his GOP challenger and Republican Gov. Matt Bevin.

On Saturday, the first year Republican governor posted a video on Facebook tying Stumbo to Bill and Hillary Clinton and their anti-coal comments. The 53 second video is produced by the House Republican Caucus Committee and already had 32,000 views on Facebook.

“The same people that push the Obama/Clinton War on Kentucky Coal are now funding the campaigns of Greg Stumbo and Kentucky House Democrats,” Bevin wrote on his Facebook page. “On November 8, we can support our Kentucky coal miners and families by electing Republicans to the State House.”

Stumbo represents part of Pike and all of Floyd County in the eastern Kentucky 95th House District which has been affected by the loss of coal jobs.

As the GOP seeks to connect the Democratic leader to Clinton, Stumbo is using Bevin “and the millionaire political bosses from Louisville” as a foil in his race back home.

In a television ad also posted to social media, Stumbo asserts that Bevin wants to take financial resources from the eastern Kentucky community. Stumbo’s ad features audio of Bevin speaking to a group in western Kentucky about how appropriations are doled out.

The spending “…is controlled by people in eastern Kentucky, and they need stuff too, but they don’t need everything,” an audio clip of Bevin says in the spot.

The ad goes on to cast Stumbo as eastern Kentucky’s defender against Bevin in the state House, all the while playing up the leadership position the House Speaker carries.

Stumbo faces Republican candidate Larry Brown in the Nov. 8 election.
