Beshear's vetoes include moving business one-stop out of Secretary Grimes' office

UPDATED WITH VIDEO: Among the 45 items Gov. Steve Beshear crossed out of the state budget on Wednesday night was the authority for Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes to oversee a business one-stop portal site — a major campaign plank of Grimes’.
The one-stop portal allows businesses to more easily file its registration paperwork with the state. The General Assembly approved it in 2011 after past secretaries of state John Y. Brown III, a Democrat, and Trey Grayson, a Republican, pushed for it.
Grimes, a Democrat, campaigned on setting up the portal site to help businesses more easily file their paperwork.
Grimes had no immediate comment Thursday, her spokeswoman said.
But Beshear nixed language in the budget so that Grimes would no longer have oversight of that program.
Beshear explained his reasoning to reporters, saying he wanted leaders of other state agencies to have input in how the portal would be implemented:
Beshear made a personal appearance at a House Democrats’ closed-door caucus meeting Thursday to explain his vetoes.
House Speaker Greg Stumbo said Democrats would decide among themselves whether to vote to override any later Thursday — the 60th and final day of the legislative session.
Stumbo said he would prefer if the business one-stop portal stayed in the Secretary of State’s office. But he said he didn’t believe the move politically motivated by Beshear.
Beshear famously clashed with the Lundergan family dating back to his primary races against Alison’s father Jerry for a state House seat in Lexington in the 1970s.
