After eight years in office, former Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear is returning to Stites & Harbison to practice law.

Beshear will serve at the firm’s Lexington office, where he had supervised prior to taking office, according to a news release Thursday. The former governor first joined the firm in 1987.

The Associated Press first reported Beshear’s career move.

“It is a pleasure to rejoin the Stites & Harbison family where I spent many good years practicing law before serving the people of Kentucky as Governor,” Beshear said in a statement. “I look forward to once again using my unique experiences and talents as both a lawyer and an elected leader on the state and national stage to help our clients and continue to grow this outstanding firm.”

The firm touted Beshear’s accomplishments in his eight years as governor in the news release. The former state representative, attorney general and lieutenant governor will work throughout the region and Washington, D.C., because of his legal and political experience, according to the release.

Beshear previously handled complex business and bankruptcy litigation with the firm, which also employed his son, Attorney General Andy Beshear.

Robert Connolly, chairman of Stites & Harbison, said Beshear made the state “a better place to live, work and do business” as an elected official.

“Steve spent eight years running and managing what could be compared to a $10 billion enterprise with over 30,000 employees and a wide variety of interests,” Connolly said in a statement.

“His experience in managing major issues, dealing with governments of all levels, and understanding the unique needs of businesses large and small, domestic and international, will be invaluable to our firm and our clients.”
