Beshear introduces Sexual Assault Cold Case Unit

FRANKFORT- Attorney General Andy Beshear, D-Kentucky, announced Tuesday the creation of a Sexual Assault Cold Case Unit to investigate cold sexual assault cases and implement a statewide plan of action to improve justice for victims of sexual assault.

The unit is funded through a $3 million U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, National Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) grant that was awarded to the Attorney General’s office.

“These funds are allowing us to create a dedicated cold case unit in the Attorney General’s office whose sole job is going to be to seek justice for those who have been denied it for far too long. While providing the needed services to make sure that while we pursue that justice those survivors continue on a path of healing. Those who had no one to speak for them or seek justice for so long will now have a dedicated unit who work day after day on their cases. It’s truly justice.” AG Beshear said.

The funding will also cover the cost to test any remaining untested rape kits, mainly boomerang kits, ones that were sent to the Kentucky State Police crime lab, not tested for various reasons and then returned to law enforcement agencies.

The grant could pay for up to 1,500 rape kits to be tested, which would mean every kit remaining in the state will be tested.

The unit includes Victim Advocate Molly B. Cassidy, SAKI Program Coordinator Carey Hendricks Aldridge, Investigator Brian Sherrard, and Prosecutor Dana Todd.

The federal grant also allows funding for an extra Kentucky State Police cold case unit sexual assault detective.

The SAFE Act of 2016 requires that all sexual assault kits collected by police are tested.
